Royal Hoopers Basketball Club of Port Harcourt has been thrown out of the 2017 FIBA Africa Zone 3 Men’s Championship qualifiers in Lagos, the club said on Monday.
A statement issued in Port Harcourt by Queen John, the club’s Media Officer, said the club was notified of this by the FIBA Africa Zone 3 Secretariat.
“We were notified of this during the technical meeting for coaches and officials, some hours to the commencement of the championship on Sunday,’’ John said.
She said the decision was based on the move by the basketball governing body, FIBA Africa, to limit the number of clubs representing Nigeria at the qualifiers to just four clubs.
“Rather than the five earlier scheduled to take part, FIBA Africa decided that only four clubs from Nigeria should take part.
“Consequently, Hoopers will play no part in the ongoing qualifiers in Lagos.
“The club’s delegation to the qualifiers will now return to its base today (Monday),” the official said.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Mark Mentors, Civil Defenders, Gombe Bulls and Kano Pillars are the four Nigerian clubs now participating in the competition.
